Estimation of rates-across-sites distributions in phylogenetic substitution models.
Previous work has shown that it is often essential to account for the variation in rates at different sites in phylogenetic models in order to avoid phylogenetic artifacts such as long branch attraction. In most current models, the gamma distribution is used for the rates-across-sites distributions and is implemented as an equal-probability discrete gamma. In this article, we introduce discrete...
متن کاملITT analysis of randomized encouragement design studies with missing data.
In this paper, we considered a missing outcome problem in causal inferences for a randomized encouragement design study. We proposed both moment and maximum likelihood estimators for the marginal distributions of potential outcomes and the local complier average causal effect (CACE) parameter. We illustrated our methods in a randomized encouragement design study on the effectiveness of flu shots.

متن کاملRobust Estimation via Robust Gradient Estimation
We provide a new computationally-efficient class of estimators for risk minimization. We show that these estimators are robust for general statistical models: in the classical Huber ǫ-contamination model and in heavy-tailed settings. Our workhorse is a novel robust variant of gradient descent, and we provide conditions under which our gradient descent variant provides accurate estimators in a g...
متن کاملNoise Factors , Dispersion Effects , and Robust Design
There has been great interest recently in the use of designed experiments to improve quality by reducing the variation of industrial products. A major stimulus has been Taguchi’s robust design scheme, in which experiments are used to detect factors that affect process variation. We study here one of Taguchi’s novel ideas, the use of noise factors to represent varying conditions in the manufactu...
